CULTURAL CONSEQUENCES OF AIR CONDITIONING

Cox brings upsome very compelling scientific data as he urges for expedited management of our global demand for air conditioned spaces in warmer climates. He obviously understands that air conditioning is probably not going anywhere any time soon. However, he is of the camp that believes that there may be negative social consequences to the widespread use of Air Conditioning Units, which are evident in the United States. Cox comments on this aspect of modern air conditioning in Planet Green:
“Over the past twenty years, when I would find myself in neighborhoods – in Florida, Georgia, Kansas – in summer, and would find the yards, side walks, and parks devoid of all human life. It was a sharp contrast to the scene when I was growing up in Georgia, and neighbors, especially kids, would spend all day outdoors, together, all summer long. At the same time that the isolating affect of air-conditioning was becoming apparent to me (and, I assume, to others), we were all becoming aware of the threat of global warming. Here, Air Conditioning Units seemed to play a pivotal role, since with hotter weather, we would be relying even more on air-conditioning, which through increased fossil fuel and refrigerant use, would accelerate warming, creating an even greater demand for air conditioning.”
Cox brings up some interesting points here, regarding cultural, as well as environmental consequences of the widespread use of domestic air conditioning in the less-than-ideal climates of the Southern United States. He mentions visible changes that he perceives to be the consequences of a modern dependence on indoor Air Conditioning Units. My hat is definitely off to those who would stick around through the hot summers of the south! Not merely because they had to endure the difficult climate, but because of various other factors which made life in the southern climates very difficult. Prior to our modern Air - Conditioning , refrigeration, and Air - Conditioning - Heating-cooled rooms and spaces, homemakers would have to travel to the market daily in order to eat the fresh meats and veggies many of us healthful folks enjoy every day. As a woman, who would most likely be in charge of this task, I am pretty grateful that that is not the case today. If I were a pampered southern belle, I might have the luxury of regular ice delivery, which would allow me to keep the family staples cool and some what fresh for a few days or more. But this would likely not work well on the hottest of days, so, on the most sweltering August morning I would probably find myself at the market, anyway. And the like lihood of me being in such a position would have been greatly decreased in the south during this time, as many industries which are the mainstay of many modern southern cities today could not have existed without Air - Conditioning .
The first Air - Conditioning systems were created with industrial use in mind. Although the idea of “comfort cooling,” which we associate today with our home air conditioners, window units, ceiling fans, and Air - Conditioning - Heating, was not the main objective, air cooling and dehumidifying was in high demand in the world of manufacturing. When Willis Carrier, one of the first pioneers of modern Air - Conditioning patented Dew Point Control in 1907, it was immediately put to use by a Brooklyn printer. Lucky enough to be well“networked,” this printer was now able to solve a major production problem in which humidity was hindering or destroying prints. But it did not take long for Air - Conditioning and dehumidification technology to find many other industrial applications. Ammonia has both an Ozone Depletion Potential of 0 and a Global Warming Potential of 0. So, according to our modern concerns, this is still a pretty good system. However, at the time, the potential threats to the ozone and global climate were unknown.) Air - Conditioning producers were primarily concerned with the toxicity of such refrigerants, when designing an air system for domestic use. However, when Freonand other chlorofluorocarbons were discovered, with their excellent refrigerant quality and human safety, the domestic “room air conditioner” was born.
The cultural implications of modern day air central air and Air Conditioning & Heating began to take its modern form after the discovery of chlorofluorocarbons, such as Freon. Its inventor famously inhaled the new product, and extinguished a candle, demonstrating that it was both inflammable and non-toxic. With the threat of toxic refrigerant leakage a thing of the past, production of compact air conditioning systems could finally be produced at a rate to meet the large expected market demand. And their bet on comfort cooling was not a bust, as it quickly became an extremely desirable commodity. Not long after wards, most inhabitants in the United States had home air conditioning. Homes would come with air conditioning, as the standard. Southern cities grew into places people could live, and work, 365 days a year. Southern people could come to expect comfort and refrigerated food that was pre-purchased on shopping day, and retreat to their extracurricular interests in the cool comfort of home.
Of course it is true that, during this time period, American life was dramatically altered. If you wanted to find some one who truly remembers a time when indoor Air - Conditioning was not the standard, you would probably have to talk to someone very old, from a very remote or historically under developed area of the United States. I have no doubt that that person has a bit of nostalgia for how it was, but also would tell you how difficult times were. For some of us modern folks, it might seem an intolerable way to live. Then again, I am sure there was a simplicity and graciousness that many of us could appreciate.
It is nearly impossible to weigh the cultural ramifications that indoor Air and Heating and refrigeration ultimately brought with it. One may champion the advent of heating and cooling as one of the greatest events of all time; making modern life, medicine, and the technology of the future possible. Likewise, another may say that automated home Air and Heating and refrigeration was essential to women’s liberation, as it allowed domestic life to evolve, and created many of the industries in which women worked. However, some might say it was the beginning of a devastating disconnect between humans and their environment, as work and other activities replaced the antiquated “dailies” which revolved around, essentially, hunting and gathering from markets and the land. Furthermore, the beginnings of out modern day food crisis, health problems that arise from corn subsidies, and a severely imbalanced American diet, as the origin of food became more and more removed from local market places. The ability to control our indoor climate most definitely had an impact on just about every aspect of American life that one can imagine, and during this time was a direct catalyst of many social and cultural changes.
However, what about the past generation years or so? Can Air and Heating be blamed for changes in the American life style since, say, the 1950’s? Since the original introduction of home heating and cooling, there have certainly been dramatic shifts in the political and social climate of the United States. There have also been additional technologies introduced, which change the way we both perceive the world and interact with it.
I will credit this Cox fellow with more than simply a broader range of knowledge on the science of Air and Heating. He is a nice looking guy, for middle age (if he is old enough to remember the early 1920’s, I would definitely like to know what he is eating, and what school of yoga he attends!) The cultural changes he refers to are probably the same that we all (everyoneover 25) may have noticed, over the past few decades. People do seem to spend more time indoors these days. In less than ideal weather, parks and natural areas are often empty, if not only sparsely populated. Outside of the “health and fitness” crowd, it does sometimes seem that people do a lot less walking, and many pedestrian-friendly activities seem to have waned. And there is, in my opinion, a lot less“community” life than it seems there used to be.
I grew up in the 1980’s, when chlorofluorocarbons and ozone depletion was coming to the enter stage of environmental concerns. My first hairspray was one of those kinds you manually pumped, forgoing the need for CFC’s. I never complained about the horrible functioning of such new products, because I never knew any better. We knew that toxic waste was a big deal, that littering could kill a beautiful bird or turtle, and that we were burning a giant hole in the sky. Recycling was gaining steam, and I enjoyed crushing cans. I played a lot, outdoors, returning as late as I could get away with to a cool, air conditioned home. Even then, I took our central Air and Heating largely for granted.
What seemed like ages after the phasing out of chlorofluorocarbons, a new environmental concern reared its head: global warming. Cow farts, my car, and merely breathing were going to send the planet into a furnace. By this time, I was living on my own, wandering around aimlessly as my generation tended to do, living in the tropical climates of Florida from the dry deserts of Texas and New Mexico. During this period, I only went without indoor Air and Heating, in the summer time, a handful of times. I still spent a lot of time camping and being outdoors, but whenever I scraped together a life that included indoor lodging, central air or a Air Conditioning & Heating was always on the menu of necessary expenses. I, as well as many of the people I encountered, was definitely not an appliance junkie, and did not even have a television formost of my 20s.
The fact is, when I walk the streets of many of the places I used to love, I see the same thing that Cox sees. A sort of desolation, emptiness, and lack of community activities. And I do agree with him; many of the shadows that are castare indeed in their current form sitting indoors, in from of a vent or Air Conditioning & Heating air handler, playing video games or watching endless hours of television. The fact is, kids do not have to walk down the street, or to the local park to find their friends, as they did as late as the 1990’s; these days, they can simply text on their IPhone or log in to Facebook. Even historically outdoor activities, such as sports, are often more comfortable, practical, and possibly “safer” (by the standards of some parents) in a locked-down, air conditioned gymnasium. These are some of the major developments which have changed in the last generation. While it is true that an air conditioned home has made these choices more pleasant, no Air Conditioning & Heating single handedly catalyzed these changes.
I think it unfortunate that air conditioners, even the most efficient Air Conditioning & Heating System on the block, take so much of the heat for this sedentary indoor American lifestyle we have created. It seems that an accusation like this requiresa certain cynicism about the human spirit; give us the opportunity to for sake a full life in exchange for comfort, and we all will dive head first into the futon. It may be that we live in an age where many are desperate for an escape from all the stresses and fears, but Air - Heating alone does not beckon us to a solitary indoor existence. Just think of the times, not so long ago when kids I the United States were warned daily about the threats of a nuclear attack; this is the same era of long, outdoor summer breaks that many are nostalgic for! Air conditioned homes were an option then, too.
There is no doubt that both excess and convenience can lead to laziness and complacency. So, I fully agree that remaining conscious of our energy usage and waste is important for not only the preservation of our environment, but for us, as people. However, most would agree that the path to conscientious energy use involves a weigh in of how much benefit can be gained against how much risk. There is no denying the advantages which have been gained throughout history by the introduction of air conditioners and refrigeration. (Even the computers and electronics we use today would not be possible to manufacture, at least at the rate that they are, without industrial means of cooling and dehumidifying.
The risk is that Air / Heating may remove from some the drive to seek out other forms of comfort, which may have additional social benefits. True, if we did not have the luxury of indoor Air / Heating, some other wise lazy-feeling individuals might make the choice to escape a hot and stagnant house for the nearest creek or watering hole. Perhaps some of today’s kids would lose their focus on a video game, and choose instead to hunt down some friends at the local park. Outdoor markets would certainly gain patrons if the air conditioned super store disappeared from the scene. So, from a strictly social stand point, the benefits of air conditioned spaces include vast technological, intellectual, and medical advances. The risk: a large chunk of the population no longer continuing traditions, while others are free to continue if they so choose.
Even the idea that the Air - Conditioning & Heating, alone, may have devastating consequences to an individual’s life reminds me of that old dilemma of the kid that blows their hand off with fireworks. Would we ban fireworks for all kids, bringing the risk (and good old fashioned fun) level to zero? Or, do we write off the one kid as an idiot, who did not earn the right to fireworks in the first place, and accept the risk level of bodily harm to any kid who wished to play around? The first option deprives us all from a technology (stretching the metaphor a bit here, perhaps) that can bring enrichment and enjoyment when used responsibly. The second ignores how detrimental misuse can be, and leaves innocent minds vulnerable to learning devastating consequences on their own. Many of today’s indoor, isolating activities might have the potential for devastating social and cultural consequences upon their misuse, which could be avoided if we just banned the central air or Air - Conditioning & Heating, forcing that individual to find comfort elsewhere. But, there goes all of the amazing benefits Air / Heating and climate control makes possible.
So, let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water. For every firework lit by a match, there are many other applications which enrich our lives and make us safer, healthier, and more comfortable. Many will turn on their Heating and Air Conditioning on a hot day, maybe get some cleaning done, read a book, cook a meal, spend some time with their pets or family, and do things they other wise wouldn’t do, with an appreciation and reverence for the Heating and Air Conditioning appliance and what it has done for them on this particular day. Instead of blaming the widespread use of Air / Heating, perhaps we should be looking at the value of the activities which have such a heavy draw that they keep people from the outdoors and each other.
